Finnish tech firm Bluefors grows quantum presence in US

Bluefors aims to empower companies by employing innovation at ultra-low temperatures, essential for quantum technology, thereby influencing advancements in quantum computing, green energy and transportation.

Bluefors, a Finnish tech company specialising in cryogenic systems, has expanded its production facility in Syracuse, New York, making it the largest manufacturer of dilution refrigerators in the US.

The expansion will increase Bluefors’s cryo-cooler production capacity, boost its research and development (R&D) capabilities and, for the first time, enable the manufacturing of dilution refrigerators at its US site. Overall, the facility’s capacity will grow by nearly 45 per cent.

“With this investment, we are strengthening our production capabilities and skills to support the growth of the quantum sector and helping to advance the industrial development of quantum technologies in North America,” said Jonas Geust, CEO of Bluefors.

US Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer praised the expansion and highlighted its impact on New York state’s status as a hub for advanced technologies.

“With this major investment into their state-of-the-art cryo-cooler manufacturing facility, Bluefors is leading the charge towards the next frontier of quantum technology right here in Onondaga County,” Schumer said.

Bluefors’s headquarters are located in Helsinki.

He added that the expansion, which will add over 3 250 square metres to the facility, positions Bluefors to meet the rapidly growing demand for advanced cryo-cooling solutions.

University spin-off

Bluefors was founded in 2008 as a spin-off from Finland’s Aalto University and targets the rapidly growing quantum technology industry. The company's cryogenic systems, including cryo-coolers, provide stable and ultra-cold environments, for example, for quantum chips, which need temperatures as low -273.15 Celsius to perform with precision. Bluefors's products are also used worldwide in academic research and other sectors, such as medical and life sciences.

In 2023, Bluefors acquired US-based cryo-cooler technology company Cryomech, which built the original Syracuse facility in 2020. Bluefors also expanded into Asia by acquiring cryogenic equipment distributor RockGate in Tokyo, Japan. The company now employs over 600 people across Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and the US.
