Finnish universities make sustainable impact
LUT University was ranked sixth in responsible consumption and production, 34th in climate action, 40th in clean water and sanitation, and 88th in affordable and clean energy.
Teemu Leinonen/LUTA total of seven Finnish universities have been listed in the annual Impact Ranking by Times Higher Education.
The second edition of the ranking assessed the ecological, social and economic impact of 677 universities around the world by measuring each against the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Aalto University was ranked second in progress on the sustainability goal of responsible consumption and production, and fifth in industry, innovation and infrastructure. The university’s overall ranking of 47th was the highest achieved by a Finnish institution.
Other notable rankings for Finnish universities included sixth for the University of Helsinki (80th overall) and Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT (101-200th overall) in climate change and responsible consumption and production, respectively. The University of Turku (101-200th) ranked 13th in peace, justice and strong institutions recognising its research on law and international relations.
Also the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Oulu and the University of Jyväskylä featured in this year’s ranking, each in the 201-300 bracket.
The Impact Ranking was once again led by New Zealand’s University of Auckland. The Australian universities of Sydney, Western Sydney and La Trobe in Melbourne rounded out the top four.
